Rush Alumni Lindsay Horan scores against Thailand at FIFA Women’s World Cup!

The day started out with a flood of American fans showing up in Reims and it was amazing to see the support, just so many people taking over the city.

The game, it started off with so much focus by the team, you could just tell they were locked in and ready to go. It turned out exactly how you would want to start a World Cup, they came out firing. The first half I thought they played some really good pieces of soccer, moved the ball really well. Their movement and ability to get in different pockets of space was a thing of beauty multiple times in the first half and it made my heart happy.

Yes, they were playing Thailand, which isn’t as defensively organized maybe as other teams will be, but the fact that they could move and create the overloads they created was really beautiful to watch.

It would be important to get off to a fast start and get a lot of people on the scoreboard and get some substitutes in. They did both of those things. Not only that, the substitutes came in and scored, including a goal by Mallory Pugh of Highlands Ranch. To have Alex Morgan score five goals, you couldn’t ask for a better start than that.

Lindsey Horan (Rush Alumni) of Golden, a midfielder, was everywhere. She was on the ball a lot, and that’s when Lindsey is at her best. The more she gets the ball, the more she can feel the game and the less she thinks about what to do, she just does it. She did a really good job of doing that and setting the tone early. She got on the ball and would push into pockets of space, but then would come back and get the ball right by the center back. It was awesome!

The United States is one of just four teams to win a World Cup since the tournament started in 1991, joining Germany, Japan and Norway. The Americans have most titles of any country.

Up next for the United States is World Cup newcomer Chile on Sunday in Paris. In the final group match before the knockout round, the Americans will travel to Le Havre to face nemesis Sweden, who they’ve been grouped with six times in World Cup play.
